Under a Buck, Every Day: Goodwill Tests New 99 Cent Strategy at Select Stores

Bargain-hunters are sure to love a new concept Goodwill is testing in select stores. For a limited time at its stores in Dickson, Gallatin, Springfield and Nashville’s Bellevue community, Goodwill will offer a wide variety of merchandise priced at 99 cents every day.

Beginning Tuesday, May 30, thousands of items, including clothing, linens, decor, kitchenware and more, will be on sale for just under a buck. These 99-cent items will be marked with a tag of a particular color, and signs will alert shoppers to which color indicates an item priced at 99 cents.

In Springfield and Bellevue, these items will be displayed in a special section of the store called 99 Cent Bargains. In Dickson and Gallatin, the 99-cent merchandise will be found throughout the sales floor.

Customers at all four stores will also find a large selection of merchandise marked down to half off Goodwill’s already unbeatable prices.

All sales of donated items in Goodwill’s stores support its mission of changing lives through education, training and employment. Every purchase helps to fund career assistance and meaningful, paid work for people with disabilities and other barriers to employment.

Is this promotion still going on? My mom has a friend who had thought it was permanent but all stores are very far from Murfreesboro so I did not want to drive there and it have ended. Thank you.

Yes. The 99 all day, every day is still happening at our Dickson, Gallatin, Springfield and Bellevue Stores. Come out and see us! We are still in the testing phase and have not decided if we will push this concept to all our other stores. It has been however been received well and our customers are enjoying it.

I commend you for the latest marketing trial. I have worked in retail for 14 years, so I’ve seen many concepts. Goodwill is my favorite for clothing–arranged by categories, sizes, and colors. Also where else can you ge brand names for 99 cents!?

I think you should have had at least one in Clarksville, TN since we have so many Military families there. They could use the discounts as well as any one else.

Hi Cheryl. These stores were chosen only to provide a good sampling of store types and communities. Also, military families receive a 10% discount every day at Goodwill.

Thanks. I live Goodwill but how can you leave out places that are not as wealthy. Instead you pick Gallatin, Bellevue, Dickson, and last Springfield.
Maybe Dickson and Soringfield could benefit more than the other two places mentioned.
We have the Military in Clarksville.
    Something is unfair about this.
The weathier people get bargains? Ok. I may limit my business in Goodwill. Why do the people at top come up with ideas like this?
Especially to read this on Memorial Day.
    I am Retired Military.
Thank you for this pick me up.
Linda Hall Drake at your service.

Hi Dan. Goodwill is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization. Revenue through the sale of donated items is used to fund our mission of changing lives through education, training and employment for people with disabilities and other barriers to employment. One of the goals of the concept we are testing is to speed up our merchandise rotation, meaning customers will find more “fresh” merchandise discounted more quickly.

I hope you’re not turning the Gallatin store into a 99 cent store like the one on New Shackle Island road in Hendersonville. It’s so gross to go through the big boxes. They have broken items in them as well as broken glass. You need to wear gloves while going through them because they are so dirty and also so you won’t get cut .

The 99 cent merchandise at the Gallatin store will be found among the racks and shelves, not in boxes.
