Facing the Storm: Cameron’s Path to Redemption

When Cameron Moore learned that American bison instinctively run toward storms to minimize their suffering, something clicked. His Goodwill Workforce Development Coach, Jessica Millender, shared the metaphor to help him understand that avoiding life’s challenges had only prolonged his struggles.

Cameron’s early life was full of promise — bright, athletic, and musically gifted. After earning a football scholarship to college, poor choices derailed his future. He returned to Middle Tennessee, where drug and alcohol abuse led to multiple incarcerations—including time in the jail overseen by his father, a sheriff’s department official.

In 2023, Cameron hit rock bottom. Unemployed and unable to support his family, he was desperate for change. Encouraged by his girlfriend, a former Goodwill client, he visited Goodwill’s Career Solutions Center in Spring Hill.

That’s where he met Jessica. Over three months, she helped him build a resume, manage his time and finances, and enroll in a UX Design course and the Persevere Program for justice-involved individuals. Jessica also connected him with a therapist and helped him focus on personal growth and employability.

“She made me remember who I was and how I was raised to be,” Cameron recalls. “Jess brought me out of darkness. I owe her everything.”

With Goodwill’s support, Cameron found work in construction, earned promotions, and reignited his passion for music. He joined a friend in a local event venue business and is preparing to release his first country single in July — coinciding with his 31st birthday and five months of sobriety.

Today, Cameron’s income has tripled, and his relationships with his family have begun to heal. “My dad is super proud — watching me evolve as a man. That means everything,” he says.

Thanks to your support, stories like Cameron’s are possible. Together, we’re helping individuals face life’s storms — and come out stronger on the other side.

DONOR SPOTLIGHT: Betsy and Ridley Wills

Betsy and Ridley Wills are this year’s Impact Awards co-chairs, a celebration honoring Goodwill clients and employees on October 2nd at Music City Center.

Betsy and Ridley are deeply rooted in Nashville’s history, business and philanthropy. Betsy is co-founder of YouScience, helping individuals discover their aptitudes and career paths, and she is the co-author of Your Hidden Genius. Ridley, an expert in architectural history and design, founded The Wills Company, specializing in home renovation and maintenance. Their leadership reflects their commitment to strengthening the community and shaping its future.

Q: Your deep ties to Nashville’s history and culture are well known. How do you see Goodwill’s mission aligning with the city’s growth and evolution, and what role do you believe it plays in preserving the community’s character?

Betsy & Ridley:

We both appreciate Nashville’s sense of community: people look out for one another, roll up their sleeves, and volunteer. Those values shaped us, and we see them reflected every day in Goodwill’s mission.

As our city rapidly changes, Goodwill plays a powerful role in preserving Nashville’s heart, reminding us to slow down and invest in our people. It’s not just about economic growth — it’s about the kind of community we want to be.

Q: Betsy, your work with YouScience has helped countless individuals discover their aptitudes and career paths. How do you think Goodwill’s job training and employment programs complement this mission of helping people unlock their potential?

Betsy:

What I love about YouScience and Goodwill is that we start with the same core belief: everyone has value. At YouScience, we help people understand their natural abilities — and then connect that to real opportunities. But we all need support, guidance, and a shot at something meaningful.

That’s where Goodwill shines, offering tools, training and encouragement. It’s not the kind of work that makes headlines, but it changes lives in ways that last.

Ridley:

In design and renovation, I’m always thinking about how to take what’s already here and make it useful again — without losing its soul.  That kind of reuse and reinvestment is exactly what Goodwill does, too.

They help people rebuild, without erasing who they are.  Goodwill takes what’s strong, what’s still good, and helps folk move forward with pride and purpose. That’s not just practical — it’s deeply respectful.

A final thought from Betsy & Ridley:

If you’re reading this and wondering what your part is — it’s simple: give what you can, in whatever way you can. Donate items or financial support. Shop with purpose. Recommend Goodwill to someone who needs a second chance. When a community comes together with that mindset, amazing things happen. Let’s keep building a Nashville that remembers where it came from — and makes room for everyone to thrive.

Members of Goodwill’s Construction Training team hold a check for $15,000 donated by Garney Construction. The funding will help expand access to career training and certifications for individuals pursuing jobs in Middle Tennessee’s growing construction industry. The partnership reflects a shared commitment to building stronger communities through workforce development.

The Wilson Group Real Estate Services toured Goodwill’s Cockrill Bend facilities on May 22 to learn more about the nonprofit’s mission and programs. Organized by former Impact Awards co-chair Robin Andrews, the visit included a stop in Goodwill’s Construction Training Program workshop. JUST A THOUGHT: A Season of Impact

As I wrap up my first full quarter at Goodwill, one theme keeps rising to the top: connection. Whether it’s a conversation with a donor, a story from a team member, or a moment shared with someone in one of our programs, I’m reminded daily that real change happens through relationships. It’s in those moments of connection that our mission comes to life—and it’s what makes this work so meaningful.

We’re looking forward to gathering with you at our Impact Awards on October 2, co-chaired by Betsy and Ridley Wills. This year’s program will highlight individuals who are building brighter futures with support of Goodwill. It’s a chance to reflect on the progress we’ve made and the lives being transformed every day.

If you ever want to be moved and inspired, I invite you to attend one of our training program graduation ceremonies. At a recent construction training program ceremony, I heard a student say, “this is the first thing I have finished – thank you for believing in me.” And an instructor told the students, “You may be graduating from this program today, but you’re now part of the Goodwill family.” These moments capture the heart of who we are.

The construction program is just one of the many ways we execute our mission: to help people realize their full potential through the power of work. Your support makes this possible. Thank you for believing in our mission, and for being part of a community that shows up, gives generously, and helps others move forward.

We’re grateful to be in this work with you.
