Goodwill Industries of Middle Tennessee, Inc. is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization founded in 1957 whose mission is changing lives through education, training and employment.
We provide training and employment opportunities for people with disabilities and others who have trouble finding and keeping jobs, including veterans, seniors, ex-offenders and youth who dropped out of school.
We collect and sell donated goods in our retail stores to earn revenue for our mission. Ninety-one cents of every dollar Goodwill spends are applied directly to our mission.
Goodwill’s vision — inspired by our founder, the Rev. Edgar J. Helms — is that all people have the opportunity to reach their fullest potential through the power of work.
Goodwill has been a nonprofit partner in Rutherford County since 1963, when boxes to collect donations were placed in Murfreesboro and Smyrna. We opened our first store in Murfreesboro in 1986. Current facilities include:
Goodwill’s impact on the economy is significant. A study conducted by the Business and Economic
Research Center at Middle Tennessee State University in 2015 found that for every dollar Goodwill spends, it creates $3.30 in benefit to the community.
Allison Miller, 28, is a cashier who has been employed at Goodwill’s Murfreesboro store on Church Street since September of 2016. Allison, who has epilepsy and cannot drive, had been out of work for three years before attending a Goodwill job fair. She received resume assistance and took computer classes with Career Solutions and eventually applied at the Goodwill store. Initially after she was hired, Allison’s supervisors said she was shy, nervous and unsure of herself, although she seemed determined to succeed. Allison worked hard to achieve her twin goals of becoming a cashier and being hired full-time so she could receive benefits. Today, Allison is one of the store’s best employees and an inspiration to others. “I have a lot more confidence in myself, and I know I’m doing a great job,” she said.
Goodwill donated more than 1,000 paperback books for the library at the Rutherford County Jail after book donations to the jail dwindled because of the COVID-19 pandemic. “Receiving the books is such a blessing,” Deputy Jill Miles said. Each year, Goodwill assists hundreds of people with a history of criminal incarceration as part of its mission of changing lives through education, training and employment.
