Goodwill ‘Style With A Purpose’ Meet-up Set April 21 In Mt. Juliet

Free Event Featuring Area Influencers to Celebrate Affordable Fashion & Sustainability

Guests can discover new strategies for assembling eye-catching outfits at bargain prices while browsing clothing and accessories hand-picked by six popular fashion experts during the next “Style with a Purpose” Meet-Up — a special evening at Goodwill’s store in Mt. Juliet.

The free event will be from 5:30-7:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 21, at 1985 Providence West Parkway in Mt. Juliet. Everyone is welcome, from cost-conscious fashionistas to thrift-shopping newcomers. Falling the day before Earth Day, this Style with a Purpose — Goodwill’s ninth but the first to be held in Mt. Juliet — will celebrate both thrifted style and sustainability.

Guests can enjoy interacting with the experts and get personalized advice to make shopping more fun and rewarding. They can browse Goodwill’s shelves and garment racks but also merchandise specially selected by each influencer from area Goodwill stores to reflect their unique style or shopping strategies. Refreshments will be served, and door prizes will be given away.

Participating fashion experts include Kina Monet, Shana Berkeley, Jennifer Hicks, Akilah Skukura Moore, Porsche Pope and Betsy Tannenbaum. Each of these area women has gained a strong online following through posts about thrifted style.

Many shoppers say one reason they purchase second-hand clothing is to reduce their impact on the environment. They note that “fast fashion” — low-cost clothing that mimics luxury trends — is sometimes produced at great cost to the environment and using exploited workers overseas.

“Having grown up in Oregon, it’s part of the culture — recycle, reduce your carbon footprint,” said Jennifer Hicks, one of the fashion experts participating in the upcoming Style with a Purpose Meet-up. “I definitely carried that here and converted my husband. And that’s absolutely another reason why I thrift: because I’m not contributing to fast fashion and, when I buy things, I wear them for a long time.”

All purchases of merchandise benefit Goodwill’s nonprofit mission of changing lives through education, training and employment.
