Janet, a mother of five, never imagined she’d have time to pursue further education. After being laid off from her remote job as a reimbursement specialist in early 2023, she visited Goodwill Career Solutions in Brentwood. With five children ranging from ages 4 to 19 and homeschooling responsibilities, she doubted she could manage a new career path.
Through Goodwill’s Connecting Forward Program, Janet met with career coaches who encouraged her to enroll in the Data Analytics Program. The 12- to 18-week course required 16–20 hours per week and covered data cleansing, analysis, and visualization. Despite her busy schedule, Janet committed to the program, studying early in the morning and late at night while continuing to homeschool her children.
“It was challenging, but I loved how it was self-paced,” she said. “Each time I completed a module, I felt immense joy.”
While still in the program, Janet secured a new remote job as a reimbursement specialist with a major healthcare provider. She later completed the Advanced Data Analytics course, further strengthening her skills and career prospects.
“I now have high hopes to grow where I’m at,” she said. “This training opened the door for my supervisors to consider me for future positions.”
Janet now shares Goodwill’s mission with other moms, encouraging them to explore the opportunities available. “Goodwill provides so many resources—from resume help to career training,” she says. “I’m so thankful for the skills and knowledge that will allow me to go even further in my career.”
